Im Brie

Chapter One

I have traveled far and near and have never seen such an exciting and interesting place as Hawaii.  I will never forget the night I washed up alone on the ocean shore, wondering what I would find in that strange but beautiful land.  That very next day I witnessed Natives doing some kind of ritual they called a Luau.  It was amazing seeing them carry a dead pig and place it in a hole, and bury it with leaves. That night was amazing the music and dancing and how much you could tell they loved there home.  But, the very next morning just about sunrise I was woken by the weirdest feeling.  It was different then the native's bare feet felt on me. It was hard and heavy with no feeling of a native.  Once I looked up I new for sure they weren’t from around there, their skin was so light and they actually had clothes on.  I heard them say that they were happy to have finally made it, so now they must go to work.  I wondered what that meant exactly, and was sort of scared.  A few minutes later I heard them say that they were going to civilize and Christianize the natives so that they could become better people.  I even heard that an Imiola Church was going to be built for the missionaries from America, which was in 1820. I didn’t understand what was wrong with what Hawaiians believed in.  I guess that they believed in superstitions and many strange traditions that were passed down by story telling, which was bad in the eyes of the Missionaries. That’s what they called themselves, people that come and spread their religion around because they felt that their religion was superior to anyone elses.
That was a very interesting day in Hawaii.

A few weeks later I was again awoken very early by the sound of men arguing over what’s right and wrong.   They didn’t understand how business men could just walk in and make changes in their economics.  They were making money fast on plantations that the natives used to own and control.   I decided to try to come to a conclusion, but it was hard. The business men became profitable fast and ended up with sugar plantations.  When I heard that the natives were mad and that they wanted to change the situation, I knew something bad was going to happen.  Well a few days later around almost sunset I was alarmed by a loud sound coming from the village.  A few minutes later I saw a huge crowd of people walking towards me, all definitely not Native.  They were talking about a queen, and how she wouldn’t allow the Americans to just come to her home and take it away from her without a fight.  I guess she wouldn’t go through with the annexation, so to get her out of the way the Americans imprisoned her, Liliuokalani. Once she was gone, I heard one of the Americans say that next was the native king (Kamehameha)so that they would be able to make a new legislative and cabinet just like back at home. I saw a annexation ceremony if I had to guess it was about 1898 when I saw Hawaii annexed with the U.S.   This whole thing started to scare me, and to top it off it was organized by the businessmen it wa s called a coup d’etat which was backed by the military.

A few days went by and life in Hawaii changed a lot for me. It was not fun anymore. It seemed more like a lot of work was going on.  Finally, one day in the afternoon  the American army showed up in a submarine, nearly running me over. It was very interesting to watch all the men come out and start to talk about a plan that they needed to make fast.  I wondered what for, but soon found out that they needed to stop Japan from growing and taking over Hawaii. If they did  take over they would become strong and the Americans would become weak and could possiably be attacked by Japan.  Also, I heard that they would have taken over the Pacific trade threatening the American's trade. For along time this war in Hawaii went on, but the Americans ended up stopping them and eventually grew.  They built a base which helped them to control and protect their homeland from not getting attacked and also helped them to conquer other lands.  Well this is the end of my adventure in Hawaii, I saw a lot and witnessed anger.  America seemed pretty strong and knew exactly what they wanted to do to become an empire, well atleast start.  If you didn’t it figure out, I am a piece of sand that has traveled many places, but this was truly my favorite adventure.
