Chapter7:

Yes Sir- Hello my fellow citizens I am in the United States Army and I today I am here to tell you the reasons why the U.S. decided to intervene on Latin America. I would first like to start out with my name I am Colonial Rutabaga, yes I am named after the vegetable.  Well anyways I would like to start out with the Roosevelt Corollary.  This was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine that justified intervention.  Between the end of the Spanish American War and the beginning of the great depression the U.S. sent troops to Latin America countries 32 times.  It was written by Teddy Roosevelt, and he expressed how he felt that the U.S. was a civilized nation and that we had the right to do whatever it took to stop wrongdoing throughout the western hemisphere. This is what made us able to intervene in Latin America

To begin, I first went into Panama. We intervened it times the first being in 1856 because we were trying to protect the Atlantic-Pacific railroad from there nationalists.  We decide that the Panama Canal was a good thing and that if the French were to actually build it and grow in the minds of Panama that bad things would occur.  But thankfully they failed, which then we the U.S. then were asked to build it for them and succeeded.  I feel like they asked us to build it because the whole time we were over there encouraging them to get independence from Columbia.  In conclusion we built it in return for money, but later on Teddy said that the Canal would be a strategic move to control.

Next, I went into Venezuela in the hopes of coming out with better goods and trade then before.  We had had a few problems with this country before.  It had a lot of good resources and it was not to fat away.  It was tropical and very wealthy.  Also, in 1895 we I was in a dispute over the Essequibo River Border and in turn we got a little bit of commission if it.  We could go there for anything, like steel, rice, fish, coffee, and paper.  We helped them out to by going to them for everything, making them the 25th largest market for the U.S and us the 14th largest source for goods.   Over all we intervened here for the goods for our country.

Third, was Nicaragua it was a place where we had to go to defend ourselves.  In 1909 we provided support for the people rebelling against there President Zelaya. On November 18, 1909 I was sent over because 500 revolutionaries including 2 Americans were executed by the President.  This made us angry and in turn we stated that we justified this intervention to come over and protect the U.S. lives and property.

Last we intervened Mexico. This was also a country were we had to go in and make sure we were not taken advantage of.  It all started when the Mexican Revolution began after the election of their President in 1910.  Our president Wilson feared that Mexico might but forces on us that were hostile.  At first we let it go, but then navel accidents happened which made us and Wilson upset, in return sending over forces. We were commanded to intervene to protect us and our U.S. cities from being attacked. Also, Pancho Villa was the man that set up these attacked and so we went into Mexico to try and find him. In the end we couldn’t find him and on January 1917 we withdrew from Mexico.

So I am proud to state that by intervening in these countries we got a lot and solved most of the problems.  Thank you for being good U.S. citizens. GoodNightJ
