Chapter 4:

Hello I am President William McKinley.  Today I am going to show you my journal of events that took place during the Spanish-American War. Many of these events helped us as America to expand.

January 1898- the U.S.S. Maine was sent from Key West, Florida to Haven, Cuba to protect the U.S. during the time of the civil disturbances. This was a good thing to see us be smart and protect ourselves before it got worse.  -This was a ship of the U.S. Navy-

February 15, 1898- The U.S.S. Maine exploded and sank in the Havana Harbor. We didn’t know at the time how it happened.  We thought it could have been by accident from a mine. I witnessed 266 die and only 89 live. At this time we were involved in the Spanish American War. We thought that it could have been Spain trying to kill off our men, or slow us down.

February 9, 1898- the De Llome Letter happened on this day.  It was a letter that I as president was never supposed to see.  It was written by Enrique de Lome the Spanish minister and was supposedly stolen from the post office, on its way to one of his friends.  I then saw it in a newspaper saying that the Spanish minister wrote badly of William McKinley. The minster said “He is weekand catering to the rabble, and, besides, a low politician, who desires to leave a door open to me and to stand well with the jingoes of his party.”  On today this letter was published, making me very angry, and made me want to get involved with the War

1880-1889 and still today- today yellow journalism made me angry.  I don’t understand why people have the nerve to lie about information in a newspaper.  I witnessed how the Industrial revolution changed the newspaper for the worst.  Once someone stupid lied in the newspaper it could then be copied a thousand times.  This was bad, for example we published wrong information about the Spanish and American dispute, making sure that we then got involved in the war.

December 10, 1898- today the Treaty of Paris was passed. Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines all wanted independence, but they were all struggling to be free.  On this day this treaty allowed Puerto Rico and the Philippines to cede to the United States. Also, not on this exact day Cuba fought for independence, which lasted four months but soon turned into a conflict. I saw our navy want Spain out of the position of having outposts in the Caribbean and in the South Pacific. This dream angered Spain when they heard of the news.

May 29, 1898-Today I saw 1060 men and their horses and mules make there way to the Southern Pacific railroad.  Their plan was to go to Tampa, Florida and then to Cuba.  All these men were volunteers, which made up the Rough Riders led by Teddy Roosevelt.  It was constructed especially for the Spanish American war.

Throughout my years in office I have witnessed good and ugly.  If you are reading this I hope you enjoyed my thoughts and learning about the events that took place.
