Chapter 8:

Hello and good morning I am the White House. I live in Washington D.C. which is a wonderful place to be.  I have been around for many years, and have seen many different people in and out of me.  Today I would like to talk specifically about three presidents. All three have changed the foreign policy in to there own and unique way.

First, I would like to talk about Theodore Roosevelt and his Big Stick Theory.  He was the 26th president and the leader of the Republican Party as well as the Progressive movement. He was actually the vice- president but sadly William McKinley was assassinated and so the Roosevelt became the next president.  He was the youngest president ever, so many people felt like this was not a good thing.

He named it the Big Stick because it referred to the military and how it was a threat.  It also described his corollary to the Monroe Doctrine and came from the phrase which meant negotiation peacefully and simultaneously. Another one I heard him say was “Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick” and he took this one to heart. This policy he created stated strongly that the average citizen would get a fair share under his policies.  Also, I saw that he strongly believed that the nation like individuals should do their part to maintain peace and order, that a civilized nation should be responsible for others.  I felt that as I watched him introduce this policy that this could help us solve some problems.

One problem he saw happen was the how the Japanese thought that they could send as many immigrants over and that they could become educated. We decided with them that that was not fair agreeing to give Japanese that were already over fair treatment, but in return they couldn’t send any more over. We both agreed ending this argument. He also helped us be able to create a canal for trade.  A series of treaties passed through my door, making it legal for us to own land for the canal. Finally I saw us gain land and a beautiful canal be built. Another was once we had the land and a canal, we signed with Europe to expand the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.  -"Chronic wrongdoing, or an impotence which results in the general loosening of ties in a civilized society . . . may force the United States, however reluctantly . . . to the exercise of an international police power."  And so a test happened during the domestic republic financial crisis.  They needed help so we the U.S. went in and took over the tariffs, and in 2 years all of the debt was paid of. All in all Roosevelt’s policy worked and helped out.

So as that was important another president soon came through my doors introducing the Dollar Diplomacy.  This term was not told by William Howard Taft it was named from the critics.  They saw him as a money man.  I heard him in his room one night say that his actions were to substitute dollars for bullets.  In many ways I saw how he wanted to help and inspire others.  One was in Latin America he wanted to protect the approaches to the Panama Canal. Two, in the east he attempted to safeguard the territorial integrity of china and promote the open door policy. Last but not least he wanted the settle many North American issues, which he ended up settling two out of three. I thought that Taft was an interesting man, and I was sure glad to see him leave.

One other man I would like to mention is Wilson, and his Moral Diplomacy.  He spread it all over the Western Hemisphere.  I felt that he was trying to influence and control foreign nations through the exercise of economic power.  He was a man who favored neutrality, and felt that it was not right to take a side in WW1.  When he saw things get rough he let the U.S. result in armed confrontation to solve many problems.  I also witnessed him change Taft’s policy for the reason of Latin America.  Are government was mainly focusing on protection the U.S. investments in countries. I am proud to say that his foreign policy worked very well.

I feel like one important thing he did was to be very cautious.  In Mexico power had been passed form person to person and when Wilson did not recognize the leader he got protective.  He wanted to use his Diplomacy as a policy of “watchful waiting.” SO I am so very happy to the White House.  I get to see new people everyday and years and I always have a beautiful view.  I hope that you could see how each of these presidents helped make us who we are today.
